What you can expect from working with me:
In the first session I will help you identify long term goals with quarterly check-ins on your personal progress. Early on, the work is focused on establishing coping skills, identifying resources, and developing a supportive relationship.
When you are ready, we will ease into working on the presenting issues, one small section at a time. As we process intense thoughts and emotions, you may experience anxiety, uncomfortable feelings of guilt, sadness, anger, frustration or have difficulty regulating your emotions within your circle of support. All of this is normal and your coping skills, your resources, and the process of counseling will support you.
The road to healing changes you and changes the relationships with people you choose to associate with. In some cases, there may be a referral for medication assisted therapy, depending on the intensity of your symptoms.
It is best if we partner in your healing process both inside of the therapy sessions and when there is homework outside of session.
Confidentiality
The law typically protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and a psychotherapist. Information is not disclosed without written permission. However, there are exceptions to this rule.
Exceptions include, and are not limited to:
If I hear that an individual in counseling is legitimately threatening serious bodily harm to him or herself, I am obligated to seek hospitalization or contact an emergency resource who could provide protection, and if I hear legitimate threat of harm to another person, I am required to notify the potential victim or contact the police department.
If I hear a child, elderly person, or disabled person is being abused, I am required to file a report with the appropriate state agency.
In addition, a court order might require me to release information contained in records or require me to testify in a court.
